I would think that it would take longer than 5 days, even if Ed were burning energy at 3x normal. A healthy adult can fast for a month without ill effect, and although Ed is a child, he wouldn't be on the brink of death in 5 days ... that would be like saying a normal child could go from healthy to the brink of death in 15 days.
I'd also think that someone would notice him ... y'know, getting a little peaked and thin around the cheeks before he was skeletal. :D
