What is Secret Satinalia?

Secret Satinalia is a celebration of the gift-giving spirit of the holiday by arranging a round-robin style giving of gifts. Each participant puts their name in a hat, and then all the names are drawn out at random; the person whose name you draw gets a gift from you, and you'll get a gift from whoever draws your name.

But in secret! That part is very important! It has to be as secret as the existence of apostates in Kirkwall! ...So in other words, not really all that secret.

How do I get in on this action?

Easy! Just reply in the comments of this post below. Replies are screened, so the only people to see your post will be the moderator (me) and yourself. Anon commenting is on, so even if you don't have a Dreamwidth account you can still sign up here.

Remember that if you sign up to receive a gift, you are also committing yourself to giving a gift. You give one, you receive one. That's the spirit of Satinalia. Try to create a gift that is respectful of the giftee's preferences. Remember, give gifts like the Warden, not gifts like Hawke.

What kind of gifts can I give?

Fanfic and fanart are the most typical types of gifts to give, but alternative types of content (graphic edits, playlists, et cetera) are also welcomed. One of the answers you will be asked to fill out in the sign-up form is what format of gift you will be making, and whether you would be willing to accept alternative content gifts. As with f!hawke/m!hawke preferences, we want to make sure that everybody gets paired with the kind of gift they like best.

OK, but why THREE gift ideas?

We've noticed that different prompts/requests are more suitable to different media. Some ideas are better suited to an art request, and some better suited to a prose request. And many creators find it easier to choose from a few different prompts rather than one. 

When writing your wish list, please make an attempt to include at least one art-type request and at least one gift-type request. So "Anders and Hawke striking a battle pose together" is more of an Art Prompt, while "Anders having a lengthy internal monologue on the greater symbolism of Hawke's mighty thews" is more of a Fic Prompt.

What about NSFW or smutty requests? Are those OK?

Smutty requests are perfectly OK, but as with the "art prompts" please try to include at least one non-smutty prompt so that your Satinalia buddy has some flexibility. Not everyone is comfortable with creating NSFW content, while other creators relish the opportunity.

I prefer female Hawke/I prefer male Hawke. Is that OK?

Both mhanders and fhanders fans are welcome of course! In order to make sure that everybody ends up with a prompt and a gift that they are comfortable with, you'll be asked to specify in your entry whether you prefer male Hawke, female Hawke, or are okay with both. We will make the effort to match up mhanders and fhanders fans with each other so everybody gets the thing they like the most.

Is there anything that is NOT allowed in my gift?

There are no hard and fast rules, but last time there were nearly universal  requests for "no Rivalmance" and "no Justice bashing" among participants, so we'll take those as a given.

How long do I have to work on my gift? What should I do with it once it's ready?

You should receive your Secret Satinalia buddy's request by Sunday, November 19th at the latest. Aim to have your gift ready for your Secret Satinalia buddy by Monday, December 18th. Once it's done, come back to this post here. (Reply screening will be off, but anon will still be on.) Post your fic or art in an anon comment, and the moderator (me) will contact your Satinalia buddy to let them know where to go to find it! I will also be posting links to all of the entries on Tumblr, under the tag #Handers Secret Satinalia .

Do I have to stay anonymous? I want to share my gift with the world!

The initial gift-giving should be anonymous -- that's the Secret part, after all -- but once the event is over, you can feel free to publish in your usual venues with your name on it!

Sure!

1. To sign up, make a screened reply in the comments below. Fill out the form (just below this) with all the information. Remember that if you sign up, you are committing to giving someone a gift as well as receiving one.
2. After the sign-ups close on 11/17, you will be contacted by the moderator (me) with the name and request info of your selected Satinalia buddy. Pick one of the three gift ideas, and start writing/drawing.
3. Try to finish your gift by 12/18. When it's finished, reply here (again) anonymously with the fic or a link to your art. The moderator (me) will contact your giftee to let them know that it's ready.
4. After the event is over, you can repost or publish your gift anywhere you like with your name properly on it.
5. All posts on tumblr about this event will use the tag #Handers Secret Satinalia .

So... so I agonized over it and decided that I'm not gonna do NaNo this year. I'm just too flat-out exhausted with the new job. @_@ I'd forgotten how draining a real 9-5 job can be; by the time I get home in the evenings I'm just a brick in terms of creative energy. I seem to recall that the last time I had a full-time job, the only way I was able to get anything written was to write a little bit in my lunches and breaks; if I could get even 100-200 words written in a few minutes' time, then that evening I could use that as a springboard to expand on the scene. That's... just not happening at this job. It requires a much higher level of mental involvement; when I'm in a work headspace, I just cannot bring a fandom headspace into it. At all.

In addition, my guild just started back up raiding. We're not a hardcore guild by any means; 3 hours a night, 3 nights a week. But that does mean that for those 3 nights of the week I come home, rush around to get things done for the day, log in and raid all evening, rush around to get ready for bed, and then sleep. Writing does not fit in that schedule ANYWHERE. Towards the end of the last expansion, although we were still raiding, we would pretty much finish up all the content within one night, so things were much looser. Not right now -- we need every minute of that raiding time if we are to improve.

So between the job and WoW, I really just don't see NaNo happening this year. And... I think I'm okay with that.

NaNo has got to be one of those things that you do for yourself, not for anyone else. And I have been doing it for myself. The first year, I did it to prove to myself that I COULD; that I could produce on a deadline and at a high rate. The second year, I think, I did it to prove that the first year wasn't a fluke. But this year -- what would it be? To prove to myself that I can produce even when incredibly stressed out and busy? Yeah... I think that's an opportunity I'm willing to pass on, all things considered.

No NaNo, then. But perhaps a mini-NaNo? Yeah... that's the ticket!
