sitting with it in his hand, trying to nerve himself up to using it on himself. he genuinely believes it would be the best thing for the world, but he's still afraid

nott appears in the corner of his vision and curls up next to him.
N: Caleb, what are you doing?
C: Making the world a better place, mein schatz.
N: Without you? I don't think that would be better.
C: Don't you? *tears overflow* I've been nothing but a burden and a curse since I was a child. I've hurt so many, many people. You already know, schatzi. Everyone would be better off if I was never born.
N: But I'd miss you.
C: You wouldn't miss me. You wouldn't have ever known me, so there'd be nothing to miss.
N: Do you really believe that?
C: I do.
N: Why don't we look and see?
Wind blows, world fades out, they enter Cutscene Space.
C: What is this? What's happening?
N: A chance not many people get, Caleb. To see the fall before the jump. The consequences before the act. A chance to see what the world would be like without you.
Caleb recognizes Blumenthal, recognizes his parents. He watches them live a childless life, and grow older than he ever got to see them. But they are still poor farmers living a hard life. His mother dies of a fever in middle-age, and his father dies shortly afterwards, and they are buried peacefully in the town graveyard.
C: *still crying* How can there be any other choice?
N: That's one. Now let's see the rest.
Scene shifts to Soltryce academy/Trent's base. Dissidents are being brought in. Caleb flinches as he recognizes many of the people that he tortured or killed. Now instead of him, Astrid/Wulf/trent himself/others are doing it.
C: Nothing's changed...
N: Why would it have changed? You were an instrument, nothing more. A gear in a machine. Take you out, and another one fills your place.
C: Then it really wouldn't make any difference at all, would it? If I'd never been.
N: Not to these poor souls, no. But to others, you did.
Scene shifts to inside of a prison, Nott hiding in the corner of a cell. A stranger is brought in and put in the cell with her. The stranger is a short man with a shaven head, squat and thick with muscle, with cold eyes. Nott hisses at the newcomer and Caleb recognizes this as the day that he and Nott met. But instead of retreating to his own corner of the cell, this stranger attacks her barehanded and beats her to death. Outside the cell, the guards laugh as the goblin girl's screams echo through the prison.
C: Why? Why would anyone do that?
N: Not everyone in the world is as kind to outsiders as you were, Caleb. Not everyone would befriend a small goblin girl in a prison cell.
Scene shifts again to Trostenwald. The Mighty Nein is fighting against the nergaliid, but neither Caleb or Nott is there.
C: They still did it, even without us...
N: But not without a cost.
The Moondrop carnival is arrested and hanged, Molly the only survivor joins them on the road bitter and grieving.
Scene shifts to Alfield. The Mighty Nein, minus Caleb and Nott, are fighting the manticore and the gnoll cultists. Beau is helpless, unable to fight in the dark. Fjord is killed by the manticore. The rest of the Nein retreat for their lives, and Alfield is overrun by the gnolls.
N: Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?
Scene shifts to the sewers of Zadash. The Nein hand over the dodecahedron to the Crownsguard, not realizing what they have.
N: Small moments like these, potential that slips by unrecognized, can herald the greatest disasters of all.
Scene shifts to the fight against the Hydra, Beau is attacked by many heads and killed.
Scene shifts to the south road to Nicodranas; Caduceus, traveling alone, is killed by an ettin.
N: Every change makes a ripple, spreading outwards from the point of impact. Things that start small, but each has its own effect on what follows.
Scene shifts to Labenda Swamp, Jester and Yasha are taken. Molly dies. Beau, Nila and Keg attack the Sour Nest, but are repelled: Keg is killed, Beau flees, and Nila is captured and forced to watch as her child is killed in front of her.
Yasha, beaten and caged, is handed over from Lorenzo to Trent Ikithon as money is exchanged. Jester, chained and gagged, disappears in darkness.
C: Stop it!
N: Why? This is the world you wanted. A world without you.
A rising crescendo of images: Lorenzo, presiding unchecked over a caravan of slaves, Ikithon wielding the dodecahedron, a blank-faced and scarred Yasha behind him, Avantika rising uncontested over the seas, the Crawling King erupting from Xhorhas.
C: No more. Stop!
N: It's not up to me to stop it, Caleb.
The images fade, leaving Caleb crouched on the ground with his hands over his ears. The world is still greyed-out, but he's back at the campsite with the dagger in his hand.
N: You see, Caleb, you've really had a wonderful life. Don't you see what a mistake it would be to throw it away?
Caleb looks at her for the first time. Her face is hidden completely in the shadow of her hood, only glowing eyes and her mask showing. There's a white aura around her. When he looks over at the campsite, he can see the form of Nott still asleep there.
C: You aren't Nott.
'Nott' smiles, and her mask moves with the smile.
N: No. But her love for you was what allowed me to be here tonight.
C: Who are you? What are you? Why did you show me all this?
N: You are more than your past, Caleb Widogast. And your life is an inextricable part of a world where all your friends -- all your loved ones -- can go on living.
Caleb lowers the dagger.
N: I'd hold onto that, if I were you. There are much better places to plant it than in your own heart.
'Nott' vanishes. The greyness disappears as well, and Caleb is back on watch. The sun is just rising, and Jester is waking up, yawning.
