Ed/Scieszka fluffishness for [livejournal.com profile] saya_aensland

Singular Scieszka, that's what the girls in the dormitory call her; for she has never been on a date, spends all her time in the library or her apartment, and she is strange.

It's not that she doesn't mind what they say, or that she's never lonely, but she doesn't have it in her to chase after a boy, or to play the games the other girls play. It wouldn't bring her happiness, because other people just make her uncomfortable, stifled and miserable, especially boys. She can't read them, can't understand them.

She spends her time reading. Books, she understands.

------------------------------------

She turns a corner and comes face to face with Edward Elric -- the National Alchemist whom she helped a while ago, who had given her the money that saved her mother.

He grins, rubbing his hand behind his head and looking sheepish. "Sorry," he said. "I was looking for a book in the sorting area, and I saw you passing by..."

"Oh," she said, and it's easy to smile, "the sorting area is a real labyrinth!"

He laughs, "Well, as minotaurs go, you're not so bad."

She stares at him in astonishment. She's been making that joke for years now, and he's the first one to get it.

"Er," he says, even more sheepish, "I was just wondering if you'd like to -- you know -- go for coffee."

He's embarrassed, nervous, hopeful -- almost eager -- and Scieszka realizes, with a start, that she can read him.

"Sure," she says. "I'd love to."

------------------------------------

"Going for coffee" turns out to be metaphorical; it turns out neither of them actually like coffee. When they're settled at a cafe Scieszka orders hot chocolate, and with an expression of disguised relief, so does Ed.

It's enough to remind her how young he is, by several years -- something about his presence makes him seem so much older, makes her feel like a teenager again.

But, she thinks, studying him, maybe that's not a bad thing.

Edward is easy to read as a book; his emotions display plainly on his face, in his voice. Scieszka gathers, as they talk, that he is alone tonight for his brother is visiting with friends, and lonely, and came to the library to lose himself in the distraction of books.

He asks about her work in Records, then about her mother. Embarrassed at monopolizing the conversation, she inquires into his own life, but it quickly becomes obvious that he's the first boy she's ever met who doesn't want to talk about himself. She gets the feeling it's something he'd rather not think about.

Their hot chocolate comes, and then their sandwiches, and she makes another joke, this one about Thyestes, that nearly sends him off the cafe stool with laughter.

They linger until Ed checks his watch and says Al must be home. That he wants to go home and be with his brother is easy to read. That part of him wants to stay here with her longer, too, makes her glad.
