So: Con report!

I dragged myself out of my bed (with difficulty) at 9 AM on Friday (alarm was set for 8 AM, but we see how well that worked) and piled out the door by 10 AM. Got there by 10:30 and spent the next three hours in registration line. Ugh. Thank god for blackjack on the cell phone and the gracious lend of [livejournal.com profile] solitude1056's iPod. I thoroughly approve her taste in music, by which I mean it matches mine.

I was worried about the state of the AMV contest, since that's really what I go to cons for and [livejournal.com profile] windandwaterand [livejournal.com profile] aoi had both warned me about the ticketing system at cons. Fortunately Sol was on hand, and the woman has a magical ability to avoid lines and drift through blocks, so I asked her to grab a place in line for me: she returned shortly with a ticket. Woot.

After getting out of the lines, I wandered about the Matsuri for a while, failed to catch a fish (not that I would have kept it) and succeeded in catching some cotton candy. First time in my life I've ever had CC that was actually bubblegum-flavored. Bizarre. What IS bubblegum flavored with, anyway? It doesn't seem at all natural.

I then sauntered down to the dealer's room and had time only to waste my money on an Elrics wallscroll before Sol called and wanted to meet up with me, so that I could see where the hotel was and transport her booty there. We briefly stopped by the Gundam Wing photoshoot on the way, at [livejournal.com profile] pixiepilot's request, but didn't stay long, nor take any pictures.

Back to the hotel: it was one of the roadside inn type places, with rooms directly outside and no food or room service, and thus quite cheap ($84 per night) so I got a bed all to myself. Woot. I unloaded my food (lesson one of surviving cons: bring plenty of food with you!) and we set off to back to the con. Before we had to line up for the AMVs, we went to grab dinner with [livejournal.com profile] ponderosa121, [livejournal.com profile] windsorblue, and [livejournal.com profile] klingonpoo at the Marriot cafe, where I actually ended up eating dinner all three nights. Woe, my wallet.

Do note: the Anaheim Convention Center is extremely large. But not nearly as confusing as the Baltimore Convention Center.

I then scooted over to attend the unofficial FMA photoshoot -- which I would not have known about at all if not for [livejournal.com profile] wiccat. It was great fun, really. Lots of creative costumes. Lots of fun antics and poses going on. I saw, in no particular order: many many Eds, many Winries, a number of the gunnin including Roy, Hughes, Fury, Havoc, Hawkeye, Ross, and Sheska, a couple of Izumis, one very good Scar, a Rose with a baby, a Pride-Ed from Illusion of a Bluebird, several Sloths, a Lust, several Envies, a Wrath, several Greeds -- alas no Pride or Gluttony -- a Ling, a Lan Fan, a Cosplay Al, a young Al, a restored Al (who refused to do an Elricest pose with one of the Eds) a Gate, and a partridge in a pear tree. Ed and Scar faced off, Envy obligingly killed both Hughes and Ed, there was some Ednvy yaoi, and Winry cahsed Ed around with a bottle of milk and a wrench. Pictures are forthcoming.

We then spent the rest of the evening either in line for or watching the AMV contest, which did not, by the way, start on time. We also got some unfortunate seats -- far enough to the back that it was hard to see the front screens, but close enough to the middle that it was impossible to see the back screens. Alas.

The AMV contest was overall good -- much better than, say, last year's Otakon. There were some good ones in the drama category, including one Inu-Yasha one that actually made me care about Kikyo and Inu-Yasha, which is hard to do. I seem to recall I voted for that one simply for making me care, but there were others which were good.
The drama category was overall unimpressive and a flop, with a few half-decent ones. I was startled to see an Animatrix video set to "It's My Life" -- the same song as [livejournal.com profile] sv_chan's wonderful video that didn't qualify. If the reason it was disqualified was because of that piece of crap action video that used the same song, I shall be very pissed.
The comedy section was GOLD. Everyone has to see Bride of Berserk, The Wizard of Ozaka, and The Purpose of Persecoms, at the very least. Brilliant. I had a VERY hard time picking votes between them.
Last was the A-MTV or SFX category, which had some nice videos, but nothing I'd knock myself out to get. Note to self, must find out who the AMV winners were.

The AMV contest went till 11:30, so that did me for the night. Sol and I went back to our hotel room and I discovered to my dismay that I did not in fact have the eyepatch which I'd stayed up late making on Thursday. Big bummer. So I was simply Roy-with-incorrect-insignia throughout Saturday, although I did make the effort to get a good pair of Roy gloves from the dealer's room. I also saw one cosplayer with the neato lion tabs on her collar, inquired about them, and was told she had a friend who was making casts of them to sell. Awesome.

Saturday I was bad. I'd really wanted to go to the KOTOKO concert on Saturday at 2, but by the time I got off my ass and got my costume assembled, it was too late. I spent most of the rest of the afternoon trying and failing to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] asidian, practicing waltz lessons with [livejournal.com profile] auragirl and [livejournal.com profile] jade_pen, and wasting money in the dealer's room. (My acquainance with auragirl and her friend got off to a poor start. We were both heading to the hotel where the dancing was, and when I saw a Bradley, a Munich Ed, and an AlH crossing the street in front of me, I figured they had to be [livejournal.com profile] jade_pen, [livejournal.com profile] auragirl and her friend. So I crossed the street and glomped onto the Ed from behind, which apparently scared her quite a bit, and then slipped in an unseen stream of water, nearly brained myself, and got dirty water on all three of us. Oops. Suave, that was not.)

The ballroom dance was fun, although I didn't stay for all of it. I now know how to waltz, technically, and did a few turns with both [livejournal.com profile] jade_pen (who is a good dancer, btw) and with Ed. (Ed was most unfairly taller than me, and insisted on leading, so I think I shan't share that picture any time soon.)

After an hour I headed back to meet with [livejournal.com profile] asidian for real, who turned out to be charmingly cute and shy. (I shall refrain, for the sake of her nerves, from bubbling on about her book.) We headed for dinner, and I did most of the talking for the first while until she started to open up a bit.

Did I do anything else after dinner? Can't recall, though there must have been something between the 8 PM dinner and the 10 PM meeting with [livejournal.com profile] cryogenia and [livejournal.com profile] sarubaito. Although there were a few moments of uncertainty before I actually identified her.

Asidian: Where is this meeting place again?
Me: Well, she said it would be the Cafe Oasis, but I don't recall if it was at 10 or 11. Come to think of it, I don't know what she looks like, either. *looking around uselessly* I THINK this is the place.
Asidian: ... ...do you know what she'll be wearing?
Me: I think she said she'd be wearing a black dress and a Dante wig... like that person over there!
Asidian: *thinking* Doofus.

THAT was a good deal of fun. Cryo is super-awesome and so is her husband. :D Drinks were on them. Although I didn't really take advantage, only ordering a Smirnoffs, which I also introduced Asidian to. She had gone quiet again on being introduced to Cryo, Saru, and [livejournal.com profile] tdei, but then Cryo started giving away doujinshi, and a good time was had by all.

After drinks -- around midnight, IIRC -- we broke up, and Cryo, hearing of my costume woes, actually offered to make me a new eyepatch RIGHT THEN. So after a few commemorative photos (I didn't seem to get one, in fact, I don't seem to have any of asidian at all, oops) we trooped upstairs, and spent the next two hours talking pron, eating chocolate, sewing felt, and checking the last episode for references. (Okay, I lie. I didn't do any sewing.) They were then awesome enough to drive me back to my hotel, since it was a little late and I wasn't that sure about the security of the area... or of my ability not to get lost in a dark alley somewhere in the TWO BLOCKS and ONE TURN from the con to my hotel. I am an expert at getting lost.

On Sunday, I admit I WALLOWED in laziness. I slept in till nearly 1, and turned on my phone immediately after waking up -- which unfortunately was thirty seconds too late to catch Cryo's call, and she did not leave a callback number. ;_; There really wasn't anything else I wanted to do until Steamboy that night, so I lazed about until 4, met back up with Asidian, and we raided the dealer's room one last time. I spent WAY too much money, eheh. Somehow impulse shopping is easier and more fulfilling with a friend, even if the conversation only goes like this.

Me: *stopping to look at something* Oh, look at this.
Asidian: It's pretty nice.
Me: Should I get it?
Asidian: I don't know, do you need it?
Me: No. *purchases*

It was then 5:00, so I wanted to hit the only panel in the day I was interested in -- the Sub vs. Dub panel. It was pretty nice, stayed civil, although the general attitudes of the room could be summed up thusly:

Audience: Dude, dubs just aren't as good as subs. Why can't you put more effort into making subs cool and inexpensive and less into interviews about the making of the dub that nobody cares about?
Panelists: Well, whether we agree with you or not, we have a company obligation to wax enthusiastic about the dubs.

It stayed friendly though. It was mostly an audience-question-response panel. I got up and asked about studio recordings -- together vs. individually, which I've noticed makes a big difference in VA performance -- and asked why they don't tend to do more group recordings. I'm not entirely satisfied with the answer I got back, which was that if they did them in groups they'd have to take forever doing the takes over and over again and the episodes already take too long to produce because the dub companies are perfectionists.

Y'know, since the dubs are already demonstratably NOT perfect, why not devote some of that time to a change which would almost certainly effect an improvement in the quality of the performances? If soap operas with ensemble casts can produce hour-long shows every day, you can certainly manage an ensemble voice cast for half an hour per week. Hmph. The VAs prefer to do them ensemble too, y'know.

About halfway through, we left to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] icedark_elf. Awesomeness! I can relieve your mind to report that the earth did not in fact tremble or crack with the face-to-face meeting of two of the Sins. I could not hang with them long, however, because I had to run to catch dinner with Heartfelt and Leslie and HF's friend; we talked Y-con for most of the meal.

Afterwards, I mostly bummed around in Artist's Alley -- where I did not spend so much money, thank you very much -- until it was time for Steamboy. (No, I had no particular interest in seeing the Masquerade. Cosplay isn't my thing, although I was sorry to miss the skits, I wasn't willing to go to the hassle of making the lines for it.)

Steamboy was... not as good as I was expecting. I'm sure the fact that it was dubbed didn't help much (cute, terrible Scottish accents aside.) but it really didn't catch me. It reminded me a bit of Metropolis, in the having of a grand idea, gorgeous, intricate art, slightly silly plot, and totally unengaging storyline. Plus the added disadvantage of really DUMB characterization. And while I enjoyed all the steam-punk and machinery stuff, it couldn't help but occur to me that the grand machines seemed to spend at least three, possibly four times as long falling apart/being destroyed as staying together, until I can only assume that the majority of the parts were only installed as camoflauge anyway.

Grandfather: Ray! You must take this secret weapon, do as I say, and never let it fall into the hands of the Ohara foundation!
Ray: Okay! *takes weapon, runs away*
Father: Ray... I am your father.
Ray: Grandfather! You told me Father was dead!
Grandfather: When a man crosses the line into PURE EVIL, he's as good as dead. So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.
Father: I have this automail because my arm and good looks were lost to human transmutation. I mean steam. Steam, not human transmutation. But it's okay because it was done for Science! And Science is good and can solve all of mankind's problems! And even if it can't, it's still good because it is SCIENCE! Science science science!
Ray: Fullmetal Alchemist did this with a lot more class.
Father: Ray, ignore what your grandfather says. The Ohara foundation is good and nice and advances science. So give me the secret weapon.
Ray: Okay! *hands over the weapon*
Random stranger: Ray, you've been tricked. Your father is actually evil and making weapons to sell to other countries. Give it to us for safe keeping. We'll only use it to make weapons for OUR country.
Ray: Okay! *hands over the weapon*
Grandfather: Ray, you must carry on the legacy of science to the next generation. Because you know right from wrong.
Audience: ...he does?

Also, the movie had THE most POINTLESS and OBNOXIOUS female character in the entirety of anime. I'm fairly sure she was intended to be as much of an annoying spoiled brat as she was, but was she intended to be quite that pointless? She contributed absolutely NOTHING to the movie aside from making the audience cheer when Ray avoided a romantic situation with her. I can't fathom what they were trying to accomplish with her; every inch of her was useless and annoying.

Anyway. There was nothing I wanted to do on Monday, and I wanted to avoid 4th-of-July holiday SoCal traffic, so I left after the movie (around midnight) and was home by 1.

Re: The Sub vs. Dub Debate

Companies aren't going to do anything about the quality of the dubs if it means cutting into their profits. Business is about making money, and as long as people pay for what those companies are currently giving, that's what we'll keep getting.

I also meant to say that I'm glad you enjoyed the con. Jay and I are thinking of going to it next year. I may be asking you for advice on what to see and do there. ^_~

XD I think I'd say it's worth seeing. It just wasn't as good as I'd expected from some of the reviews it'd gotten.

That sounds like a lot more fun than the wedding. Except for the open bar part.

Re: Soap operas. Soap operas are really talky, too. The ratio of talk to action is incredibly high. The actors have to memorize reams of dialogue in very short periods of time--and unlike VAs, they can't read from scripts. I've noticed that actors in soaps tend to stammer more, and you can usually tell when someone has forgotten a word and is trying to recover. And you know what? It sounds fine. It makes the dialogue sounds less scripted and more natural than a lot of TV dialogue.

Open bar no, but I did get a free Smirnoffs and was introduced to the pina colada. Must keep that in mind for future.

...the more I think about it, no offense intended, but "We can't take a step to improve the quality of our soundtracks because it would be a hassle" impresses me less.

I'm going to steal Envy's thing for a minute...

*intensely jealous!* I want to meet Cryo and Aura and Jade and Greed. (and, well, any of the other sins too.)

Yeah, I'm hoping.

Really sucks to have to wait a whole year though. Need more cons!

Yay! I'm so glad you had fun. I was sort of worried, to be honest, cause you'd said you had low expectations. ^^;;

On an utterly random note, I think that the fact that the plural for Envy is "Envies" is hilarious. Don't ask why. ^^;;

hey cool, i had a blast at anime expo, too. but i just have to ask, was this the one scar you saw?

Image

hehe, i hope it was! we worked hard on his costume and i spent like 2 hours tatooing his arm, and he was the only Scar we saw. if not, then, well, i guess my posse didn't have the only Scar, lol. ^__^ anyway, if you're interested, i have FMA con photos on my livejournal. Did you see the Hughes with the halo and angel wings? i didn't get a picture, but his costume was seriously funny yet sad at the same time.
