[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: When an Alphonse is subjected to severe enough trauma -- usually, the death of his mate and children -- he can sometimes undergo a physiological change otherwise unknown in the animal kingdom.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: The Alphonse will nearly double in size, his bones will shift,a nd his hide will thicken into a tough, almost invulnerable shell. This is referred to as the "armor" phase.
[livejournal.com profile] tavella: ...do they ever leave the armor phase?
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: Although the Alphonse is usually quite passive, fighting only in play or desperation an armor-phase alphonse will be quite aggressive, actively seeking out and attacking predators.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: Due to their increased size, strength, and ferocity, very few predators can stand up to an Alphonse's aggression
[livejournal.com profile] tavella: they sound quite ferocious!
[livejournal.com profile] tavella: ...perhaps they should try to mate *that* alphonse with the Canadian Envy. Heh heh heh.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: Tragically, the changes in the Alphonse's physiology prevent it from being able to eat, and there has never been a known case of the alphonse reverting back to his original form.
[livejournal.com profile] tavella: wah!
[livejournal.com profile] tavella: that's so sad.
[livejournal.com profile] vikki: O_____O poor Al!
[livejournal.com profile] cryogenia: waaaah so sad...
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: These sad beasts will leave their once home territory and wander until they die, attacking and destroying any predator who crosses their path.
[livejournal.com profile] vikki: O__O
[livejournal.com profile] vikki: unless they have an Edward?
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: well, usually they enter this phase if their Edward has been killed
[livejournal.com profile] tavella: sniffles. that's so tragic.
[livejournal.com profile] vikki: oh, gosh. .____.;;;
[livejournal.com profile] kytyngurl2: :-(
[livejournal.com profile] cryogenia: so that's how they go out...
[livejournal.com profile] cryogenia: not with a whimper, but with a bang .__.
[livejournal.com profile] cryogenia: conversely, do orphaned Edwards just curl up and starve to death?
[livejournal.com profile] vikki: well, sounds like Al to me.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: There has never been a known case, however, of an armored Alphonse attacking a human or another Elric. The armored Alphonse will not usually attack non-predator animals, and other elrics seem to avoid them instinctively.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: It's rare for an Edward to outlive his mate in the first place
[livejournal.com profile] vikki: and yeah, now I want to know about the Edward.
[livejournal.com profile] tavella: cryo's did!
[livejournal.com profile] vikki: oh, man. XD;;
[livejournal.com profile] tavella: but I suppose they'll defend their mate to the death.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: since Edwards are both highly aggressive towards perceived threats and quite solicitous about their mates, often caring for their own mate's health about their own.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: However, in the unlikely event that an Edward should survive his Alphonse, he will usually survive beyond it as well.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: There have even been very rare cases of Edwards mating again, either to a younegr Alphonse, or (in captivity, at least,) to a Mustang.
[livejournal.com profile] kytyngurl2: ...........
[livejournal.com profile] kytyngurl2: HOW?
[livejournal.com profile] kytyngurl2: I keep being told that you can't get Mustang x Edward in this 'verse.
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: XD;
[livejournal.com profile] cryogenia: @_@ they must be pretty fucked up little puppies then
[livejournal.com profile] kytyngurl2: Without it being non-con, I suppose and I don't do noncon Roy x Ed. :D
[livejournal.com profile] mikkeneko: there was once a report of a widowed edward pair-bonding with an elderly Mustang in the next enclosure.

Bereaved Edwards will sometimes mate with Hohenheims as well. :)
