mikkeneko: When an Alphonse is subjected to severe enough trauma -- usually, the death of his mate and children -- he can sometimes undergo a physiological change otherwise unknown in the animal kingdom.
mikkeneko: The Alphonse will nearly double in size, his bones will shift,a nd his hide will thicken into a tough, almost invulnerable shell. This is referred to as the "armor" phase.
tavella: ...do they ever leave the armor phase?
mikkeneko: Although the Alphonse is usually quite passive, fighting only in play or desperation an armor-phase alphonse will be quite aggressive, actively seeking out and attacking predators.
mikkeneko: Due to their increased size, strength, and ferocity, very few predators can stand up to an Alphonse's aggression
tavella: they sound quite ferocious!
tavella: ...perhaps they should try to mate *that* alphonse with the Canadian Envy. Heh heh heh.
mikkeneko: Tragically, the changes in the Alphonse's physiology prevent it from being able to eat, and there has never been a known case of the alphonse reverting back to his original form.
tavella: wah!
tavella: that's so sad.
vikki: O_____O poor Al!
cryogenia: waaaah so sad...
mikkeneko: These sad beasts will leave their once home territory and wander until they die, attacking and destroying any predator who crosses their path.
vikki: O__O
vikki: unless they have an Edward?
mikkeneko: well, usually they enter this phase if their Edward has been killed
tavella: sniffles. that's so tragic.
vikki: oh, gosh. .____.;;;
kytyngurl2: :-(
cryogenia: so that's how they go out...
cryogenia: not with a whimper, but with a bang .__.
cryogenia: conversely, do orphaned Edwards just curl up and starve to death?
vikki: well, sounds like Al to me.
mikkeneko: There has never been a known case, however, of an armored Alphonse attacking a human or another Elric. The armored Alphonse will not usually attack non-predator animals, and other elrics seem to avoid them instinctively.
mikkeneko: It's rare for an Edward to outlive his mate in the first place
vikki: and yeah, now I want to know about the Edward.
tavella: cryo's did!
vikki: oh, man. XD;;
tavella: but I suppose they'll defend their mate to the death.
mikkeneko: since Edwards are both highly aggressive towards perceived threats and quite solicitous about their mates, often caring for their own mate's health about their own.
mikkeneko: However, in the unlikely event that an Edward should survive his Alphonse, he will usually survive beyond it as well.
mikkeneko: There have even been very rare cases of Edwards mating again, either to a younegr Alphonse, or (in captivity, at least,) to a Mustang.
kytyngurl2: ...........
kytyngurl2: HOW?
kytyngurl2: I keep being told that you can't get Mustang x Edward in this 'verse.
mikkeneko: XD;
cryogenia: @_@ they must be pretty fucked up little puppies then
kytyngurl2: Without it being non-con, I suppose and I don't do noncon Roy x Ed. :D
mikkeneko: there was once a report of a widowed edward pair-bonding with an elderly Mustang in the next enclosure.
