There was actually quite a time gap between writing "The Curse of the Twins" and deciding to continue that story. It was strongly implied at the end of Curse of the Twins that Yuui would go dimension-hopping in order to search for the still-living version of Fai. It was also strongly implied that he would find someone to fall in love with, but for a long time I had no idea who that love interest might be.
Eventually, though, I decided I wanted ridiculously sappy happy-endings for at least ONE of my story universes, so 'The Third Thing' and 'Family Portrait' were planned and set into motion.
