For Sera as usual. Apologies that the smut sort of fell down on the job, but you did say that it was all right to have metaphors. *stares at fic* I could have sworn that I had more planned than this.... Where'd it all go?

Title: Whatever It Takes
Pairing: Elricest
Rating: R

( That was an exaggeration, Al thought indignantly. Lately he could go for days at a stretch without having any trouble at all. )

...The fact that most of me is simply squee-ing incoherently makes this reviewing lark a lot more difficult >_<.

I like. A lot. It's just so warm and fluffy and so damn cute, and and and-

*Takes a deep breath*.

I like the way both Ed and Al are in character, too.

All in all, thanks for finishing this. *Hearts*

*snaps fingers* That's what I'd intended to do! I wanted to slap an 'ooc' label on this one for Ed being so unexpectedly uke. ^^; I mean, yes, this is Al, who can essentially drag him around by the heartstrings, but I was still a little unsure.

Still, glad you liked it. ;) Also very, very glad you found it cute and fluffy, because that was how it was intended to be, except that then it got all angsty. xp

Yeah. Of course, now that I've started thinking about it, I wonder if it isn't the presence of that port that's inhibiting his growth, by essentially holding his collarbone/rib/spine ensemble down to a certain size. ^^;

But although Winry talks about how Ed grew a little, and they had to adjust his limbs to compensate for that, they never discuss the port. I can't imagine that one that was installed when he was eleven years old would continue to function for the rest of his life, so... yeah. Either they'll have to replace it or he'll have to get his normal body back.

Eeeeee! *glomps* Elricest love, Elricest love!

And good thinking on the automail. Yeow for Ed. He should have Winry teach him about it, maybe he'd be able to transmute instead.

You'd think they would have done that a long time ago! That way he could effect his own damn repairs, instead of having to drag Winry all the way out from Central. @_@;

Still, it's not just that the metal parts need to be changed. His body his changing, and the surgery's going to have to deal with both metal and flesh parts. Using alchemy to connect the two would be skating pretty perilously close to human transmutation. It would probably be a better idea to leave it to the experts.

Well I was assuming the nerves themselves didn't really change, you'd mostly need to slacken the metal to give his body some room to grow. He'd probably heal around it naturally if he can't do it himself(if a little of fake stone allows an average alchemist to heal people - Marco, guy-loving-Lust - Ed can probably do it if he understand what he's doing. He was better than the priest and his fake stone after all.

But then again, what do I know about automail and anatomy? Not enough to make sense probably. ^^;

The assumption I was expanding on here, really, is that in order for the automail to fit solidly into his body structure, the port has got to be bolted directly to the bones. In his leg, it's probably bolted to the femur; for his arm, it's got to be hooked into his collar bone and shoulder blade arrangment. If it wasn't securely attached to his skeletal frame, he couldn't use it; the first solid impact to it would tear it off.

As those bones grow, the places where the port attaches are going to shift around -- if they get even a little out of alignment, it's going to make the arm very hard to carry normally -- and probably pull apart as the bone expands. At the least it would have to be unattached and reattached, and more likely, taken out entirely and replaced with a larger one.

Hmm, this discussion is actually kind of fun. Maybe I'm an automail nut like Winry. ^^;

*stares* How come I never think of the stuff that makes so much sense?

Can I borrow that stuff? I have a situation with Ed's automail being fucked up in G&C but of course I didn't really get into details. Just mostly said that Wrath twisted the whole thing and broke bones in the shoulder(well kicked down on both shoulders actually) but Ed just hadn't felt like letting Al and Roy know about it(too busy being pissed). I didn't really, like, figure out that twisted the port would have been what cracked his shoulder. It would make a lot more sense if I explained it like that...

...Ow! >_o Poor Ed. *huggles very carefully* I guess this means no sex then.

Yes, by all means, reference this if you need to. It was mostly just unsupported extrapolation from what we see in the show.

I love this Ed. And this Al. A lot. *licks lips*

... I'm finally getting around to reading all the Elricest known to man, far far outside of [livejournal.com profile] anax's suggested timetable... and finding myself stuck with just this one. I will re-read this a few times. It's quite brief but lovely, with an indefinable but wonderful sense of appropriateness.

I'm really glad you did. :) It was the first outright Elricest I ever tried to write, so it encompasses both all the cliches of the genre and all my reasons why I think the pairing works. So, uh, yeah. :)
