I'm new to FMA fandom but have been otaku-ing for years upon years now, and I know a good half of the spoilers even though I haven't seen much of the series yet (though I love it so, I so do). I'd love to co-conspirate if things go awry. That battlefield!fic calls my name. As does the advice!fic.

Mainly cuz I love Roy to small unidentifiable pieces.

Me too, and I'm a Roy/Ed fan, which is why it's odd that almost all my fics have been Ed/Al centric instead... it's just that people always encourage the sibcest. ;_; Perhaps I need to surround myself with more Roy fans for impetus.

I encourage both. I encourage the flourishing of the fandom in general. I'm still a Roy fangirl though and ♥ on the Roy/Ed very very hard.

(I'm a gen Roy and Ed fan, especially fatherfigure!Roy. With the sheer amount of Roy/Ed in this fandom, I sometimes think I'm the only one. ><)

*sigh* I do both Fatherfigure!Roy and Roy/Ed. it makes things interesting. in a fandom that has so much friggin incest, it just screams for daddy!kink to come to the fore too.

But on the Gen note, it just makes *sense* doesn't it? In the absense of real parental figures, who is the only one taking care of the Elric brothers two? [/insane regional DDR-related pun]

*ahem* I don't know where I'd go with it. I just love the idea of Roy feeling *protective* over the brothers and blaming himself for whatever ills befall them. I think (as Travis, amongst others, have hinted) that Roy uses his arrogance and passion to hide his weaknesses so that he doesn't appear to have any at all. (We saw that in Ep 13, even.) And I think one of the most major weaknesses he has is his love and adoration for the Elrics, his need to protect them from harm even as he sends them to these crazy missions, by giving them a reason to stay alive (okay, so that reason is for Ed to beat him up, but you get my idea...)

The ability to which Roy can really show "love" is up in the air. I hope he can, for his own sake, but honestly at this point I don't know. And of course there's a million places to go from there, but in the context of fatherfigure!Roy, this means that no matter how much he loves them (platonically or not), he can't show them because of his own arrogance and need to keep up with appearances.

...dear god, I do this much with only 13 episodes, too many fanfics, and spoilers...? I'm obviously in on the deep end.

Yes, precisely! I suppose you could make a case for Hughes, but somehow I can't really see it. They're friends, and Hughes seems to act like a brother or an uncle, but a father? Dunno. I picture Roy as their kind-of-parental-figure (although both he and Ed will deny it, of course) and Mustang's Merry Men as a kind of adopted family (Havoc is *so* the annoying older brother type. XD)

With you on the Roy bit, too. I also get the impression he doesn't like to let others close to him for fear of hurting them or losing them. Then there's the fact that he's been making enemies and will make more and openly showing any kind of affection will put them in danger. Finally, I get the impression his arrogance is a kind of security blanket, if you want, which he needs.

Adopted family! With Black Hayate and everything! *hearts* ^^ And yes, Havoc is very annoying-older-brother, with Fury to keep him in line. Hughes has a best-uncle-EVAH! thing about him, and I think Riza really longs to be somewhat normal of a woman and be a mother figure (if only to Black Hayate in canon...) Of course, that pushes the RoyAi line, which I'm rather mixed about, but whatever.

Arrogance as a security blanket...that's definitely something I'm very familiar with. A long time ago I was really into Gundam Wing, and I was a Wufei-centric non-canon-het writer (ever heard of Episode Zero? I was big on the Ep 0.) In more recent past (as in last year), I plunged into Yuugiou fandom (*gets ready to be pelted*), and Seto has a similar complex. All three have figures they want to protect and blame themselves when they cannot (Wufei's is dead, but the idea haunts him throughout the series.) What's more, all three are aloof and push other people away for the sake of their own protection. But for all of them, once you mention the right people (Meilan aka Nataku, Mokuba, the Elrics)...yeah. *nod*

I'm actually an AS dubbie (*prepares to be keeled*) though I knew about Hagaren much much earlier. And I don't mind spoilers; I read fanfic after all so I know about most of the major ones (what happens to Hughes, what happens to Al, the identity of the Sins...)

As Kaltia said, I only started watching after Christmas. I'm not an AS person, though - she sent me the series on DVD for which I am eternally grateful.
I know what you mean about Royai. On the one hand, the hints are pretty much impossible to miss... on the other... I dunno. I prefer platonic relationships to romantic in general, of course.
I adore thinking of them as a kind of family. Hughes is the uncle, Havoc's the brother. Hawkeye is... yeah, kind of mother figure, but methinks mostly responsible older sister who keeps the rest of the family in line. Fury, Breda and Falman... also big brothers? :)
I saw a small comic a few days back with Havoc measuring Ed's growth with lines on the office wall. Of course, that gets into the whole height thing, which gets into the whole violence, maiming and mutilation thing, but I still thought it was impossibly cute. :)

I'm not in GW and don't know anything about Yuugiou... like I said, Kaltia dragged me into FMA; I'm actually a Silmarillion fanfic writer originally, with the occasional excursion into Harry Potter. The only other anime I've written stuff for is Trigun.

I've been an otaku for years upon years; I came in with the Pokemon wave though my first serious fandom was GW. As for YGO, I entered it last year and to a certain extent it still hasn't let go. :D I love Trigun but haven't really explored it for fanfic, so yah.

Yeah. Fury's probably the little big brother, tries to keep them in line but doesn't have the power 'cause all his other big brothers like to tease him. ;) Havoc's the big big brother who adores annoying all his ickle brothers - or maybe Farman, although he seems a bit more distant. Not sure about Breda.
Ed's not so sure about his new family 'cause he values his independence and says he doesn't *need* anyone to take care of him and doesn't *need* any big brothers. He's also a bit jealous because he thinks Al doesn't need any big brothers other than him! XD Al, however, is of the opinion that you cannot have too many big brothers - although Niisan is of course special.

Um, here. (http://4.neutralred.org/art/45theme-03.gif) It's by Sakkiarte and actually part of a Roy/Ed series, but methinks it's quite gen and sooo cuuute! I just *adore* the idea.

Trigun fandom is rather scary, with too many Mary Sues >< There's quite a bit of VashxWolfwood slash, oodles upon oodles of VashxMeryl, WolfwoodxMilly and some KnivesxVash. *shrugs* I love Trigun as well but I don't really like any of the pairings (I can survive VxW and KxV, am neutral on WxM, don't like VxM and am still a genficcer at heart) and the fandom scares me.

Battlefield!fic?

Well, basically, it runs in my mind something like this: It's a songfic to a certain track from Les Miserables called "Bring Him Home," which is Valjean at the barricade singing a prayer for Marius' safety. It's very simple and beautiful.

So the fic itself starts with Ed and Roy out on the front lines somewhere, with Ed in a foul temper, and the two of them snarking at each other as is fairly usual. Then their unit (or hwatever) gets caught in an ambush; most or all of the troops are killed, Ed is caught in an explosion, injured, and knocked out. Roy grabs him and spends the rest of the fic struggling to drag his unconscious ass to safety behind their lines.

So yeah. I like the idea for a couple reasons. One is that it is fatherly or at least protective Roy; I'm a big Roy/Ed slash fan, but I like this dynamic as well. The other is that this fandom is full of relationship fic but not too much action or battle fic.
